Digging into China''s solar capacity numbers
Amid a record amount of new solar capacity added in China in 2024, the share held by small-scale, “distributed” arrays fell to 38%, from 58% in 2022. Grid constraints, policy changes, and...
Planned solar capacity projects will likely lead to continued growth in China's solar capacity. More than 720 GW of solar capacity are in development: about 250 GW under construction, nearly 300 GW in pre-construction phases, and 177 GW of announced projects, according to the Global Solar Power Tracker compiled by Global Energy Monitor.
China can now make more solar power than the rest of the world. Data released by China's National Agency last week revealed that the country's solar electric power generation capacity grew by a staggering 55.2 percent in 2023. The numbers highlight over 216 gigawatts (GW) of solar power China built during the year.
The total solar capacity added from January to May 2025 reached nearly 198 gigawatts, marking a remarkable 388% increase from the same period in 2024, a year when China had already set a record for renewable power installations for the second consecutive year. Additionally, during this timeframe, wind energy capacity increased by 46 gigawatts.
China added almost twice as much utility-scale solar and wind power capacity in 2023 than in any other year. 3 By the first quarter of 2024, China's total utility-scale solar and wind capacity reached 758 GW, though data from China Electricity Council put the total capacity, including distributed solar, at 1,120 GW.
