Algeria Pushes Forward with Ambitious Solar
Algeria is accelerating its transition to renewable energy, particularly solar, with plans to generate 3,000 megawatts of clean electricity by 2025.
Regarding solar power potential, Algeria is home to some of the world's highest solar irradiance levels, with the capacity to generate 1,850 to 2,100 kilowatts per hour and up to 3,500 hours per year in its desert regions.
Towards this end, Algeria launched a tender for a one-gigawatt solar energy project in 2021, comprised of building five power generation sites ranging from 50 to 300 MW each.
This program harnesses Algeria's abundant solar resources, which make it an ideal location for large-scale developments. Developed by a consortium led by Chinese solar technology company LONGi, the plant will incorporate advanced solar modules and tracking systems to maximize energy output.
The 300MW solar power plant is now under construction in Biskra province. It is the first of eleven PV projects under Algeria's Solar 1000 programme, a nationwide initiative aiming to install 1GW of solar capacity. This program harnesses Algeria's abundant solar resources, which make it an ideal location for large-scale developments.
