Recycling a-Si PV panels involves disassembly and mechanical crushing (Berger et al., 2010). Thermal treatment or acid leaching is applied to recover Si and other valuable components. However, achieving high material recovery rates remains challenging due to the complex composition of PV panels.
This approach is claimed to enable the recovery of more than 90 % of panel components, which are repurposed as high-quality secondary materials for manufacturing new solar panels and glass, rubber, and aluminum-based products.
For intact PV panels, the EVA layer is decomposed through thermal treatment at 450–500 °C, enabling the separation of the panel into two distinct glass panels. The CdTe layer is subsequently removed using sandblasting (Giacchetta et al., 2013).
4.2.1. First solar (Tempe, Arizona, USA) First Solar, a U.S.-based company specializing in the production of thin-film photovoltaic (PV) panels, operates recycling facilities across multiple locations, including Ohio, Malaysia, Vietnam, Germany, and India. The company has been reported to process over 300,000 metric tons of PV panel waste.
