Triphylite | Rare, Silicate, Magnesium
Triphylite, common phosphate mineral, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4),
Triphylite is a primary phosphate mineral found in phosphatic pegmatites and pegmatitic dikes. It alters easily into other phosphate minerals, especially manganese phosphates. These rare phosphate minerals are usually brightly colored and make wonderful mineral specimens.
Although triphylite generally does not form good crystals, it does have a wonderful although indirect benefit to the mineral world. Triphylite is a primary phosphate mineral found in phosphatic pegmatites and pegmatitic dikes. It alters easily into other phosphate minerals, especially manganese phosphates.
Uses: As a source of lithium and phosphorus and as mineral specimens. Triphylite is a rather scarce phosphate mineral. It forms a solid solution series with the often associated mineral lithiophilite. Lithiophilite's formula is Li (Mn, Fe)PO 4 and differs from triphylite by being rich in manganese instead of iron.
Associated minerals include ferrisicklerite, heterosite, alluaudite, albite, muscovite and quartz (HOM, Mindat). At the type locality, the Hühnerkobel Mine, Zwiesel, Bavaria, Germany, triphylite occurs in a granite pegmatite embedded in quartz and associated with beryl, tantalite and tourmaline (HOM, Mindat).
Triphylite, common phosphate mineral, lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4),
Triphylite is a primary iron and lithium phosphate found exclusively in sodolithic granitic pegmatites and is probably the most common phosphate in these formations. It forms a continuous
Triphylite is a lithium iron (II) phosphate mineral with the chemical formula LiFePO4. It is a member of the triphylite group and forms a complete solid solution series with the lithium manganese
